My Story: Pain, Misunderstanding, and Finally Being Heard

I want to share something deeply personal — not just for me, but for every Black woman who’s ever wondered if her pain was real, or if her symptoms mattered. This is my perimenopausal and PCOS testimony — a story of pain I felt as a child, a teenager, and now as a perimenopausal woman that finally made sense once I received the right diagnosis and support.

For the majority of my life, I lived with pain that I normalized. At menarche, the first time my period began, the pain was so severe that I thought it was just “how it’s supposed to be.” I didn’t know any different. As I entered my childbearing years, that intense pain began to lessen, and I breathed a sigh of relief — thankful that whatever it was seemed to resolve itself.

But I missed the red flags.

Because pain doesn’t always go away — it just changes.

Perimenopause: When Symptoms Return With a New Intensity

Fast forward, now in my late thirties early forties, as I began to approach perimenopause — the transition period before menopause — my body started speaking to me again.

My cycles became irregular. Ovulation that once happened like clockwork became unpredictable. My menstruation shifted from predictable to erratic. Worst of all were the symptoms that once felt like background noise — pelvic pain during ovulation, joint discomfort, fatigue that felt deeper than tired, and a frustration that I couldn’t quite name.

I began to reel back emotionally and physically.

I knew deep down something more was going on. But at every doctor’s visit, it seemed like the narrative was the same: “You’re getting older,” “That’s normal,” “Perimenopause does this.”

I believed it — until it wasn’t enough anymore.

When the Diagnosis Finally Made Sense: PCOS

One late night, weary from searching for answers, I was on YouTube and landed on a video from a Black OBGYN based in Atlanta, Dr. Tosha Rogers (@drtosharogers on YouTube.) I listened intently as she spoke about hormone fluctuations — not just estrogen and progesterone — but testosterone too. She explained how these fluctuations play a real role in issues like irregular periods, reproductive changes, and pain patterns that many women, especially Black women, are told to just tolerate.

Her voice was clear. Her explanation made sense.

And in that moment, something clicked.

I finally saw my symptoms — not as anomalies — but as part of a pattern. A pattern consistent with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

I started piecing things together:

  • The extreme pain at menarche that didn’t “fit the norm”

  • The irregular cycles returning with perimenopause

  • The discomfort that never fully resolved

All pointing to something deeper than “just aging.”

This was PCOS — and the diagnosis changed everything.

Finding Solutions That Work — Not Just Buzzwords

After living for years with symptoms that were minimized, unexplained, or dismissed, I knew I needed intentional support — support that acknowledged Black femmes and women holistically.

I began researching supplements and wellness formulas designed specifically for hormone balance — especially formulas that consider the unique health contexts that Black women face.

That’s when I discovered Black Girl Vitamins.

Why Black Girl Vitamins?

Let me be clear about something — I don’t recommend products unless I truly stand behind them. My wellness journey is personal, sacred, and real. So when a product helps me, I want other Black women to know about it too.

Black Girl Vitamins is a Black-owned, Black-woman-centered company on a mission to help Black women overcome issues that impact us through every season of life — especially hormonal health, stress, sleep, immunity, and more.

Since taking their products, I have seen real shifts in how I feel — more balanced, more energetic, more in control of my wellness again.

The PCOS Formula I NOW Know I Needed

Here’s the twist in my story:
Of all the products I’ve tried from Black Girl Vitamins, the one I thought I didn’t need — their PCOS formula — turned out to be the one my body actually does need.

When I first started my supplement journey, I had not yet connected all the dots with my symptoms — so I didn’t think I needed the PCOS blend. I thought the other support formulas were enough. But once the irregular cycles and pain patterns resurfaced, I knew something deeper was happening.

And then I read the reviews.

Black women from all over said the exact things I was feeling — irregular cycles, hormone imbalances, pelvic pain, mood swings, insulin resistance — and how this PCOS formula helped them navigate, restore balance, and feel more like themselves again.

At that moment I said to myself:

“If it helped them, it can help me — and maybe it can help you too.”

So I ordered it — and now I’m recommending it before I even finish my first bottle because sometimes the products that speak to your symptoms before you do are the ones you need most.

To the Black Women Reading This: You Are Not Alone

I want my testimony to be more than just my story. I want it to be a bridge — a message to every Black woman who’s had her pain normalized, ignored, or explained away.
